I really enjoyed this intriguing novel that not only shows the reader that it is okay to forgive a mistake, but allows readers to really understand the plot and the characters by explaining everything about the characters’ past. Can Amanda figure out a way to stop every day from being her birthday? She discovers that she isn’t the only one who’s “special” day keeps repeating. Convinced that her family is playing a joke on her, Amanda is surprised to find out that tomorrow is her birthday once more. The next morning, Amanda wakes up to find that it is her birthday all over again. This confused me in the beginning, but as the story went on, it became clearer. Amanda and Leo had always shared their birthday parties, but this year the celebrations are held separately. He’s hired a hypnotist, a rock band, and football star for his party, and she isn’t invited. She is about to celebrate with a lame Hollywood-themed party, while her ex-best friend Leo is celebrating their joint birthday by throwing a huge party. I really enjoyed this intriguing story, and recommend it to anyone who likes realistic fiction with just a touch of fantasy.Īmanda’s dreaded 11th birthday has finally arrived. 11 Birthdays, is an incredible novel written by Wendy Mass, that had me on my toes from cover to cover. Here, a tiny trick-or-treating ghost gradually works up to ringing the doorbell solo. "And all the deep dark wild long history of Halloween waiting to swallow us whole!" It's easy to creep out toddlers, so Leslie Patricelli gently eases them into Halloween with the endearing board book Boo! (Candlewick). Moundshroud and eight trick-or-treating boys in search of their missing, maybe stolen friend Pipkin. Gather the kids around on an October night and read (out loud, if possible) the deliciously lyrical, globe-circling, time-traveling tale of Mr. Rejoice, Halloween people! There's a 2015 edition of Ray Bradbury's 1972 classic The Halloween Tree (Knopf), one of the very best Halloween books ever written for eight-year-olds or adults, newly illustrated by the much-admired Gris Grimly. Moons, meanwhile, bereft of their planets, suffer the indignity of orbiting the dinner plates that emerge from a restaurant’s kitchen. The idiosyncratic world they inhabit reflects maddeningly back on our own: The sun (“yellow provocateur”) materializes beneath an umbrella only to be dumped at a lighting store (“Let it feel like everyone else”). In Modern Life, each reads like a stern and glorious fable of freakishness. And this lack of authorial direction is precisely why her poems are so wonderful. An avid reader and writer, it wasn't until I heard a snippet of a story about my great-grandmother homesteading by herself in eastern Montana that I found my true calling: writing historical fiction. I was born at Fort Lawton Army Hospital in Seattle and haven't moved very far from there since. In this case, however, the fae are using the reservation to hide magic that would alarm humans, including magical links to Underhill, the fae world. Many of the fae who are publicly known have moved to a reservation outside of the city of Pasco, Washington, in a development that echoes America’s treatment of Native Americans. Like the werewolves, the fae have been gradually disclosing their existence and some of their members to humanity, based on the theory that with the ever-increasing sophistication of technology, humans were going to find out about them anyway and it would be better to control the process. It turns out that owing a favor to one of the fae is pretty much as dangerous as owing a favor to a vampire. When Mercy used the knife for an additional and very much unauthorized purpose, she knew there would be consequences and that she would need to repay the favor in some way. In the second book, Blood Bound, Mercy had been lent a powerful knife, a fae treasure, by Zee, her former boss and a fae, to kill a demon-ridden vampire. Patricia Briggs, who has explored werewolf and vampire societies in the first two volumes of her MERCY THOMPSON urban fantasy series, turns her attention to fae society in this third volume. #3 in my 2020 Mercy Thompson reread! The Puritan is as possessed by ‘evil’ as the devil-worshipper they condemn they’re just possessed in different ways. If it’s true that the only two kinds of person who are wholly obsessed with evil are the very bad and the very good (in the sense of being puritanical about making sure everyone else is as ‘good’ as they are), then ‘Young Goodman Brown’ is as much a cautionary tale about being lured over to the ‘dark side’, because even if you don’t end up embracing it, it will already have embraced you. Young Goodman Brown actually resists the initiation in the woodland clearing, involving the blood-baptism, but the story suggests that this doesn’t matter: he has still come to recognise evil and has thus been initiated into its ways. The story is remarkable in its depiction of evil not least because it raises interesting questions about what it means to ‘become’ or ‘know’ evil. Herman Melville, the author of Moby-Dick, thought ‘Young Goodman Brown’ was ‘deep as Dante’ in its exploration of the darker side of human nature. |
